We started in Yakima, Washington and are heading to Southern California. We're currently camping in Newport, Oregon, which is on the Pacific Coast. Camping is a very important part of the American culture and will be our focus for this lesson. There are a lot of ways to camp. You can backpack to remote areas on foot, by horse or mule. Or you can take your family on an RV trip. You can bring a lot of gear (backpacks, sleeping bags, tints, chairs, pots and pans, utensils, etc.) or you can bring no gear and rough it. We chose to make it simple and bring just the essentials. We have sleeping bags to keep us warm at night, two tarps to protect us from rain and our two Harley motorcycles to get us from Washington to California, which is about one thousand miles one way. I was contemplating not retiring. This meant Afghanistan... Looking at the Afghan war footage here on YouTube, this meant a lot of walking. Up and down mountains. I'm 41. Arthritis. Out of shape. I needed to train. But the MOLLE II rucksack... sucks. It doesn't work with IBAS (Google it) because of the back plate. You can't adjusted it to the wearer, especially the hip belt. This means all the weight is on your shoulders. You already have 30lbs on your shoulders with IBAS and ammo. Can't cinch that to your hips either and with my back problems that means trouble. So I looked around the services and BAM! The ILBE. Marines call it "ill-bee". It's heavy. At 8.4 lbs, you add a 3L Camelbak and you got 15lbs before you even pack it with anything. It comes with a detachable assault back, a light, tough pack with more room than it looks. I never leave home without it. Arc'teryx LEA,F. calls it the "Charlie Pack". The ILBE is based off the Arc'teryx Bora 95. IMHO this is, pound for pound (and I'm talking bang for the buck) the best military ruck out there. There's still Kifaru. The first day we car -camped by the Castle Buttes and had a large egg and bacon breakfast the next morning. The second day we hiked in on the South end of Slim Buttes with our backpacking gear. By GPS inbound: 6.3 mi, 4h 53 min, 1.3 mph, outbound: 6.1 mi, 4h 40 min, 1.3 mph. We set our tents on a nice overlook with the only disadvantage being the howling wind along the ridge line. The view of Prairie below the cliff face and our camp site was spectacular. The wide open vista of the Prairie below and the Southern horizon made the hike worth while You definitely feel like a speck of dust trapped between the stars and Earth when you get those big sky vistas of the West. I brought a lot of water for the backpacking hike. This time of year Slim Buttes can get very hot. This video is an impression of my 7 day hike I did in april and may of 2010, from Glasgow to Fort William, crossing the glenns, moors, hills and forests of the west highlands. Hatcher Pass, Alaska. This trail is rated Moderate for hiking difficulty, and not suitable for dogs or children. I thought it was HARD, but well worth the time and effort of climbing it!!
